The Duster Coat

Forever21 coat, Nightcap top, Madewell jeans, Stuart Weitzman booties, Kendra Scott earrings, Chanel bag

The rich copper color of this duster coat puts me right into the Halloween mood.

Speaking of Halloween, I spent most of yesterday on the couch following Sivan’s birthday/Halloween costume party last night (find some snaps on my IG story, before they expire or on her Snapchat). This girl can throw quite a party! There was no detail left unnoticed or accounted for – she had a donut wall with homemade marbled rosé donuts, low tables decorated with black lace and crystals, hanging ghosts, a tarot card reader and enough dessert for four times the attendees. I’m always inspired by her creativity and commitment to celebrating (whether it’s a big birthday or just drinks on a Tuesday afternoon). If you haven’t checked out her blog yet it’s a must-read for DIY ideas, recipes and style.

I won’t be dressing up again tonight, but since Halloween falls on a Monday that’s fine with me. I hope you all had fun and safe celebrations!

Back to this outfit…  It’s recently come to my attention that this type of coat isn’t technically just a trench but “a duster coat” and I’m all for it. I’ve worn trenches a lot on the blog before (last seen here and here) and I love pulling them out in September and October. This duster is under $50 and is so soft and flattering. I love how it swings and moves when I walk and I’ve been trading in my usual leather jacket to pair it over ripped jeans and booties. If you’re not afraid of color I’m loving this pink duster coat over a white tee and jeans; the simple shape balances out the blush hue. Forever21 also carries this olive duster that I love (for $40, can’t go wrong). I was pretty pleasantly surprised with the quality of my duster from Forever – it feels silky soft and substanital.

I’ve tried steaming this thing every time I wear it out and after getting in my car it just wrinkles right up again, so I’ve officially given up on that. Looking at these photos I actually like it a little wrinkled (which is surprising for me) as it makes it look lived in and a bit cooler. I bet if you packed a duster coat for traveling it would smooth out fast hanging in the bathroom with the shower running for a few minutes, or even just while hung up in the closet.

I paired it with the prettiest lace chemise – I love this top. It’s a great basic to pair with jeans or under a leather jacket. Showing a little peek of skin and lace under a jacket is ideal for nighttime. These matte black jeans are becoming my most often-worn pants right now; they’re so comfortable and the knee rips are subtle.

Below I’ve linked more duster coat options and the best black booties to pair with them – don’t miss the chain detail on this pair. Happy Halloween!
